Our Mission

Grounded in Scripture and tradition and resting in God’s boundless grace, the community of First Lutheran Church is liberate to share the transformative message of Jesus Christ in both word and deed. With steadfast faith, we engage our neighbors to build meaningful relationships, and assured of God’s presence in the community and world around us, we eagerly extend God’s boundless love, compassion, and grace to all.

Who We Are

First Lutheran was founded in 1831 and is an affirming community of faith that has proclaimed the good news of Jesus Christ to the people of Galion in both word and deed for nearly 200 years. We are a member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Why Do We Worship?

The Holy Spirit gathers us around the means of grace – God’s saving Word and the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Communion – restores us in mind, body, and spirit, and sends us into the world to procleim the good news.

How Do We Worship?

First Lutheran takes a modern approach to traditional worship. There is no requirement or expectation that you “know what you are doing”. Everything we do is projected on the wall of the sanctuary, so even if you’ve never been to a church, you can follow along and worship with us!
In GATHERING, the Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. Through the WORD, God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and in song. At the MEAL (Hoy Communion), God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. And in the SENDING us, God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.

Worship With Kids?

Children are welcome to worship with us! We have Bible-based activity bags for multiple age groups. We also offer programming outside the worship space when it is desired.

What Does It Mean To Be Lutheran?

We believe that through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God became human and took upon Himself the sin and suffering of all the world. God did this to demonstrate God’s love for us.

Most importantly, to be Lutheran is to be Christian. Specifically, we believe that all people are imperfect and are saved by God’s grace and God’s grace alone, through Christ.

We believe that we receive the gift of grace by faither alone on account of Christ. We live in the tension of still being sinful but trusting that we are forgiven and that God is at work in us. The gift of grace expresses God’s unconditional love, and in response to that love we are set free to live gratefully and lovingly.
